We are here to help our scholars avert missteps and provide a guide path to success in the field of medicine.

Our History.

The Hampton Roads Medical Scholars Institute was created to mentor, teach and guide black men from Hampton Roads to become the physicians and medical leaders of the future. What initially started as a conversation among friends resulted in the birth of Hampton Roads Medical Scholars Institute. In 2017, a group of black medical professionals gathered to talk about our personal experiences and routes we took to achieve our goal of becoming doctors and community leaders. Although we had accomplished a lot individually, we were disheartened to learn that the opportunities for the next generation of black male physicians had not improved. In fact, since our graduation, the number of graduating black male physicians continued to decrease. The problem really hit home as we all knew young men who had difficulty getting accepted to medical school. After discussing the challenges, we decided to come up with solutions. Collectively, we devised a program aimed at averting the missteps and improving student’s chances for success. This session was our wake-up call and birthed the HRMSI. We knew the situation facing black male physicians was so dire that we could not wait for assistance. As such, we determined that action must start within our own community. We started with a mentoring plan for scholars starting their senior year of high school and ending with their matriculation into medical school. In 2019, we finalized the blueprint for our 5-year medical success plan and obtained a 5013C nonprofit status in 2021. The HRMSI is committed to providing the tools necessary to increase the numbers of black male physicians.
